Some highlights:

  • Bret's overall view of the markets and Central Bank action.
  • How YouTube is beating Netflix.
  • How Gilead is like Apple a few years ago and still a great opportunity.
  • After the success of his Relypsa investment being acquired a few weeks ago, Bret shares what two companies he's looking to for a repeat performance.
  • What he sees as the two best sectors offering value and opportunity in the market right now.
  • Why he's avoiding emerging markets.
  • What he would buy if oil drops below $40 and market volatility returns.

Ralph Baker is known on Seeking Alpha as "Shock Exchange," a name he derives from his youth mentorship program that teaches investment management skills and competitive basketball skills.

Ralph started learning to invest in the 5th grade when his dad gave him a copy of the WSJ and started quizzing him on it. Since then, he has spent decades in the M&A space. When it came time to teach his kids about investing, he decided to include the community and his youth program was born.

If Ralph can teach kids to invest (who went on to predict the Great Recession), I'm convinced he can teach us as well.

I'm looking for around 15 people who would be interested in reading and discussing The Intelligent Investor book by Benjamin Graham together.

Warren Buffett says that it is, "the best book on investing ever written" and it has remained a classic for decades and decades. Any of us would be foolish to not take it seriously.

So, I'm looking for around 15 people who want to take it seriously with me.

If you want to be one of those 15 fill out this application (no cost) and I will get back to you soon.

I am joined today with Michael Lumbard, Retired Air Force Colonel and self-proclaimed amateur investor. Despite labeling himself as an amateur, Michael has dabbled in the investment industry since his early 30’ before taking the plunge and getting serious. Michael has been a serious stock market investor for over 10 years.

Before his interest and passion in the market deepened, Michael served over 30 years with the United States Air Force, aspiring to become the “worlds’ greatest fighter pilot.” Although he wasn’t able to achieve this dream – due to a slight case of color-blindness – Michael moved on to graduate from the USAF Academy, attended the Armed Forces Staff College (War College), as well as obtaining his law degree from the University of California. While in the Air Force, Michael served in the JAG and Intelligence departments and in legal offices. Additionally, he was the Vice Commander of an intelligence base in Turkey. After retiring from the military as a Colonel, Michael began working for the California state government, where he became the House Council for Remediation and later retired as the Senior Council for the department in Sacramento.

Please welcome Michael Lumbard to the show!

A Recap of Today’s Episode:

  • Michael shares what made him decide to start investing at such a young age.
  • He tells us why he enjoys investing, and what it is about the market that makes him want to “stay in the game.”
  • Michael explains what he considers a “gambling approach” and a “fundamental approach” in the investment industry.
  • He shares why he has decided to “shy away” from diversifying in his investment plans.
  • We get a “behind the scenes” glimpse of some of Michael’s processes: His favorite resources and investment portfolio tracking systems, as well as some of his favorite authors and contributors on Seeking Alpha.

Words of Wisdom:

  • Readers tend to read and believe what they already believe. It’s human nature.
  • Don’t buy orders within the first 15 minutes of the market opening. A lot can change within those first 15 minutes.
  • Be cautious about stop orders.
  • Use limits when placing buy orders.
  • Be patient and don’t give up.

060 Mike Nadel - How I Build My Portfolio as a Dividend Growth Investor

Former sportswriter turned dedicated investor, Mike Nadel’s career story is a truly fascinating one. Mike lived the life that every writer dreamed of – writing full-time for a newspaper as the paper’s sports writer for 30 years in addition to an 11-year career as a Chicago sportswriter columnist. That is until he was laid off from his ‘dream job’ during the Great Recession.

After losing the job he loved the most, Mike began writing for a variety of financial websites, such as SeekingAlpha.com, as well as investing in Dividend Growth Investments – more specifically in blue-chip companies having long track records of growing dividends. Married to his lovely wife, who currently works as a pediatric nurse, Mike, and his wife are working toward full retirement through their smart investments, as well as Social Security and pension plans. When Mike is not writing or researching investments, he can often be found coaching his local middle-school girls’ basketball team and officiating other youth sports activities in his community.

Matt Giovanisci is a fun-loving, energetic marketing and personal finance guru as well as an expert in pool and spa care. He is the Founder and owner of Swim University, a company based in Williamstown, New Jersey dedicated to teaching people across the country and around the world how to simplify cleaning and caring for swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs. Matt’s financial history is an interesting one. It first started when he was fired from a good paying marketing job, then later laid off from a marketing director position at a restoration company. Once he was laid off, he decided that the only way he will be successful – on his terms – would be to go into business for himself, so he founded “SwimU.”

While building Swim University to the highly successful business that it is today, he became fast friends with several people in the personal finance industry. He learned many valuable tips that have helped him budget his money, and later, became one of the voices of one of the most talked about, listened to personal finance podcasts on the internet: Listen Money Matters. When Matt is not helping people learn how to make cleaning and caring for their pools easy, he can be found blogging about one of the tastiest drinks ever created: coffee!
